Tropical Cyclone George crossed the Western Australian coast near Port Hedland on 8 March 2007 as a Category 4 cyclone. Areas that were particularly affected included Port Hedland, the shires of Roebourne and Ashburton, and several mine sites. Cyclone George caused extensive damage to communities in the far north of Western Australia with three fatalities and 20 people injured.
Australian Government Recovery Assistance

On 9 March 2007, the then Prime Minister announced Australian Government support in the form of one-off cash payments to people who were seriously injured or whose main place of residence was destroyed or rendered uninhabitable as a direct result of Tropical Cyclone George through the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP).
Centrelink administered the AGDRP on behalf of the then Department of Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs. This assistance included a payment of $1000 per eligible adult and $400 per child.
The Australian Government paid $630,000 in AGDRP assisting 530 individuals.
