Assistance
Support to permanent Australian residents adversely affected by the tsunami in Samoa was provided through the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP) and Funeral/Memorial Assistance.
Centrelink's Family Liaison Officers were available to provide social work services to the families of those affected. Support included crisis intervention, personal support, referral and practical assistance to affected individuals and families.
Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment
The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment provided a one-off payment to assist permanent Australian residents who suffered serious injury, witnessed the devastation of the disaster, or who are one of the immediate family members of a permanent Australian resident who was a victim of the tsunami in Samoa on 30 September 2009 (AEST).
Funeral Assistance
Funeral/memorial assistance was made available to one permanent Australian resident who is the immediate family member of a permanent Australian resident who died as a result of the tsunami in Samoa on 30 September 2009. This assistance provided $5 000 for the funeral or memorial and related costs.
