August 2017 Barcelona and Cambrils, Spain attacks
- On 17 August 2017 at approximately 5.00pm (local time) an attacker drove a vehicle through the Las Ramblas promenade in Barcelona, Spain, deliberately hitting pedestrians in the street markets.
- On 18 August 2017 at approximately 1.00am (local time) an attacker deliberately drove a vehicle into pedestrians near the Nautical Club of Cambrils in Cambrils, Spain.
The attack in Barcelona resulted in the deaths of 15 people, including one Australian child, and the attack in Cambrils killed one person. Both attacks also resulted in injuries to over 150 people, with 34 nationalities affected.
Australian Victim of Terrorism Overseas Payment
On 20 September 2017, the Prime Minister declared the terrorist attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils, Spain for the purposes of the Australian Victim of Terrorism Overseas Payment (AVTOP) scheme. This means that Australian residents harmed or whose close family member died as a direct result of the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils, Spain may seek or share in a one-off payment of financial assistance of up to $75,000.
