Comprehensive assistance to flood-affected Victoria
The Minister for Regional Australia Simon Crean today announced early payment of grants to Victorian councils as part of the comprehensive Commonwealth assistance package for Victorians affected by flooding.
The Federal Government has brought forward an early payment of more than $92 million in Financial Assistance Grants to help Victorian local councils rebuild after the recent flood devastation.
“The payment will be made to the Victorian State Government and will provide a vital, immediate cash-flow to councils in affected areas,” Mr Crean said.
"This is a rapid response to a request from the Victorian Government and this early payment will allow flood-affected local governments to re-order priorities and have money available to undertake urgent work.
“I have been working with the Victorian Minister for Local Government, Jeanette Powell, to deliver this early payment. I have also spoken to a number of local mayors who told me the early payment would be welcomed,” Mr Crean said.
The early funding payment is part of a comprehensive effort by the Australian Government. The grants were due to be delivered in mid-February but will now be available immediately.
“As we move ahead in the recovery and rebuild process, strong partnerships and cooperation between all levels of government is crucial and includes restoration of essential public assets,” Mr Crean said.
“The Australian Government is responding quickly to the flood damage in Victoria and helping families, businesses, farmers and communities get back on their feet,” Mr Crean said.
Today’s announcement is in addition to Commonwealth assistance already being provided across 27 Victorian Local Government areas under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.
Under the NDRRA assistance, Victorians affected by the floods can apply for:
- emergency grants of up to $1,067 to provide assistance to meet immediate basic needs
- temporary living expense grants of up to $8,650 to assist households with the cost of temporary accommodation and living expenses
- clean up and restoration grants of $25,000 for small businesses and primary producers
