Sixth Anniversary 

This year marks the sixth anniversary of the 12 October 2002 bombings in Bali.  The Australian Consulate in Bali will hold a ceremony to commemorate the loss of life, and acknowledge those who survived and the families of victims on 12 October 2008.  For security reasons, attendance at the ceremony will be by invitation only.

Fifth Anniversary

12 October Commemorations

The Australian Consulate General in Bali will be holding a private commemoration service for the Fifth Anniversary of the 12 October 2002 Bali bombings for survivors and families of victims.  Australians wishing to attend the service must register in advance with the Australian Consulate General by –

Western Australia

On Friday, 12 October 2007, the Western Australian Premier, Alan Carpenter, will lay a wreath at dawn (approximately 5.41am) at the Bali Memorial, Fraser Avenue, Kings Park and Botanic Garden in memory of those lost in the Bali Bombings on 12 October 2002 and 1 October 2005.

Fourth Anniversary

12 October Commemoration

London Memorial for 2002 Bali Bombings

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has funded a memorial project in London. This project was initiated by the UK Bali Bombing Victims Group.

The memorial will be situated at the bottom of Clive steps, to one side, which is where the FCO building is located, across from St James' Park. The memorial will be in the shape of a globe which will be covered with 202 carved doves representing each victim. Behind the globe will be a wall with all the names of the deceased carved. On the paving around the globe there will be an inscription, however, the wording for the inscription is unknown at present.

The unveiling of the memorial will occur on 12 October 2006 followed by a reception at the FCO. Seats are limited for the reception. If any Australian families are interested in attending the unveilling you will need to contact the UK Bali Bombing Victims Group directly on the website below or contact Centrelink on 136125 and provide us with an email address which can be forwarded to the UK Bali Bombing Victims Group.

Third Anniversary

Commemorations in Bali

12 October 2005 – Wreath laying service at the Bali Memorial in Jalan Legian, Kuta

(Organised by the Australian Consulate-General in Bali)

A simple service was held in Bali at the Bali Memorial in Jalan Legian. The service included short introductory comments by the Australian Ambassador and a representative of the Bali Government, followed by a period of silence for reflection and the laying of wreaths.

4:30 pm – “Gema Perdamaian III 2005” (Echoes of Peace III)

This event is an annual gathering of religious representatives, government officials, police, other government representatives and community in Bali for a joint prayer to promote a message of peace.

8:00 pm – Remembrance activities at Bali Memorial in Jalan Legian, Kuta

The village of Kuta organised an evening of activities to mark the third anniversary. The program included a joint prayer for peace, candle lighting and peace song performances.

Contemporary Arts Festival 2005: series of life performances of drama, dances and music showcasing local Balinese and international artists.

Wednesday 5 – Saturday 15 October

Galungan and Kuningan Hindu’s religious holidays was celebrated all around Bali during this period to commemorate the victory of good over evil.

Thursday 6 – Tuesday 11 October

Ubud Readers and Writers Festival: The week-long festival offered keynote presentations, panel discussions, interviews, workshops, feasts, exhibitions, tours and culinary demonstrations as well as performances of dance and music.

Monday, 11 October – 12:00 pm

Sanglah Public Hospital set aside a time for survivors and families affected by the tragedy to visit the hospital, including viewing the new facilities established since 2002.

Australian Capital Territory

A wreath laying service honouring the victims of the terrorist attacks in Bali on 12 October 2002 and honouring victims of the terrorist attacks in Bali on 1 October 2005 was held at the Bali memorial in the Eastern Formal Gardens, Parliament House Canberra.

New South Wales

Malabar Family Day of Remembrance

The Malabar Family Day of Remembrance for those lost in the Bali tragedy was held on Sunday 9 October 2005. Each year, Malabar families of the Bali victims organise an informal community and family day of remembrance at Cromwell Park, Bay Parade, next to Malabar Beach. After the families have attended their respective church services in the morning, everyone gathers for the simple formalities and an afternoon of picnics and music.

The families raised the nine Australian flags, which covered the coffins of the nine locals who died in Bali. Randwick City Council sponsored this community event.

Bali Bombings Third Anniversary Ceremony

The Bali Bombings Third Anniversary Ceremony was held at 10am Wednesday 12th October 2005 at the Bali Memorial, Dolphins Point, Dunningham Reserve, Coogee Beach. To mark the third anniversary of the Bali bombings, Randwick City Council, victim’s families, survivors, dignitaries and the community gathered together at the Bali Memorial for a remembrance ceremony.

The Bali Memorial on Dolphins Point, at the northern headland of Coogee Beach is dedicated to all Bali victims and is a very special place for many of the survivors and the victims’ families. It is visited daily by people who wish to pay their respects and is a focal point for public gatherings to remember this tragedy and celebrate life and resilience.

Queensland

St John’s Cathedral

The Anniversary was commemorated at St John’s Cathedral, in the prayers at the Eucharists on 12 October 2005 at 7am and 12.30pm and was remembered on the Sunday following (16 October 2005) at the 7.30am and 9.30am Eucharists in the prayers and with the laying of flowers.

The prayers at all services commemorated those who died, were injured or affected in any way by the bombing.

Allambe Garden of Memories

The Candlelight Bali Memorial Bali Remembrance Service at Allambe Garden of Memories, Nerang/Broadbeach Rd, Nerang was held on October 12 starting with a short service followed by the lighting of the candles and traditional balinese dancers.

South Australia

The Adelaide Archdiocese hosted an ecumenical and interfaith service on the eve of the third anniversary of the Bali bombings. The service was held on October 11 at St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral, Adelaide. Leaders of different faiths, including the Islamic and Christian communities, the general public, Federal and State politicians and families affected by the Bali bombings were invited to attend the service to remember the tragic events of October 12, 2002 and the more recent October 1 terrorist tragedy in Bali. The service preceded a memorial Mass to be held in the Cathedral on October 12 to pray for the victims and their families and world peace.

Victoria

There was a Dedication Ceremony at the Victorian Bali Memorial hosted by The Honourable Steve Bracks MP, Premier of Victoria and John So, The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, on Wednesday 12th October, 2005.

Western Australia

The Kingsley Amateur Football Club commemorated the third anniversary of the Bali bombings with an open house at the Kingsley Memorial Clubrooms on Wednesday, 12 October 2005.

Second Anniversary

A memorial service was held in Bali at the Bali memorial, Jalan Legian, Kuta (near the Sari club and Paddy’s Bar sites) at 10.30am on 12 October 2004. The Australian Government was represented by our Jakarta embassy and the Consulate-General in Bali and the main feature was a wreath laying at the memorial.

0900 am – Opening of the Memorial by the Regent of Badung.

The official opening of the memorial organised by the Badung Regency.

1030 am - Memorial Wreath Laying at the Bali Memorial in Jalan Legian, Kuta.

The service was a simple one, with short introductory comments by the Australian Ambassador and the Bali Government representative, followed by the wreath laying and a period of silence for reflection.

12 October 2004 - Echoes of Peace II

“Gema Perdamaian II” or Echoes of Peace II was organised by Bali Tourism Board on October 12, time: 1400 at Bali Bajra Sandhi field in Renon, Denpasar. The event was attended by religious leader’s representatives from Bali, Tibet and India.

State, territory and local commemorations

A variety of other local commemorations were planned across Australia to mark this deeply significant day.

Australian Capital Territory

A church service was held in Canberra on Tuesday 12 October 2004 to mark the anniversary. The service was attended by the Governor-General and took place at 10.30am in the St John the Baptist Church, Constitution Avenue, Reid.

New South Wales

The Randwick City Council supported two community events to mark the second anniversary of the Bali bombings, held at Coogee and Malabar respectively.

A simple ceremony was held at the Bali Memorial on Dolphins Point, Coogee on Tuesday 12 October at 12:30 PM.

The Malabar function was an informal community and family day of remembrance organised by the Malabar families. It was a family picnic day and an opportunity for local young people who are learning music to play in their bands for their community. It was held on Sunday 10 October in the picnic area at Cromwell Park, Bay Parade, next to Malabar Beach. After the families attended their respective church services in the morning, the main formality, starting in the park at 11am, was to raise nine Australian flags. These flags were those that covered the coffins of the nine Malabar locals who died in Bali. It was followed by a sausage sizzle (donated by Malabar RSL) and later, music played by two bands of local young people through the afternoon.

Queensland

St John’s Cathedral at 373 Ann St, Brisbane commemorated the 2nd anniversary of the Bali Bombing at the 9.30am Service Sunday, 10 October. Special prayers remembered people who died, were injured or affected in any way by the bombing. There was also be an opportunity in the Service for people to lay flowers of remembrance or to light a candle.

The Allambe Memorial Park at Broadbeach, Nerang Rd, Nerang held a Candlelight Bali Remembrance Service from 5.00pm – 7.00pm Tuesday October 12 in memory of those who were killed or injured in the terrorist bomb attack.

Sunset Memorial Service for Bali Bomb Victims was held at Beach at the Lagoon area of the Esplanade at Manunda on 12th October 2004.

South Australia

The Government of South Australia organisd a Multi-Faith Memorial Service for victims of Terrorism, to be held 6.00pm-6.30pm on Tuesday 12 October 2004 at St Francis Xavier Cathedral, Wakefield St, Adelaide. It was an opportunity for South Australians to come together showing our support for the victims of terrorism; whatever their age, race, colour or creed.

Victoria

A memorial service was held on Tuesday 12 October 2004, Lincoln Square, Swanston St, Carlton.

Western Australia

Western Australia built and opened a memorial on the first anniversary of the Bali tragedy to commemorate those lost and injured, and acknowledge those who provided support. The Bali Memorial, at Kings Park in Perth, is specifically designed to frame the sun's rays at dawn on 12 October each year.
